Points to watch

Read very carefully the conditions attached to the prospectus and policy before taking out this insurance. For example, companies vary considerably in their definitions of disablement. A common requirement is that to qualify for total disablement benefit you should be prevented from following your occupation or doing any work for profit. Some companies will still consider you to be totally disabled if you take on other work of lower status; other companies also state that you must be confined to your house or a hospital.

Partial disablement benefits are normally paid if you perform some work which is not your usual occupation. Some companies may charge an extra premium for this cover, while others include it in the basic policy.

You should also compare definitions of `loss of limb'. Although this usually means amputation, it may also sometimes include the inability to use your hand, arm, foot or leg, and some companies will also compensate you for permanent damage to your fingers or toes. Companies will only pay lump-sum benefits if death or disablement occurs within a fixed period, varying between three and twelve months after the accident. Disablement income benefits are not usually payable for more than two years at a time. You cannot normally claim for death or disablement arising from self-inflicted injuries, and you will also find difficulty in obtaining cover for disability arising from war, excessive alcohol, drugs, venereal disease or flying in an aeroplane (other than as a fare-paying passenger). If you engage in especially hazardous sports, e.g. motor racing, wrestling, diving, mountaineering or pol0, you will have to pay an extra premium for your insurance, but since you particularly need this cover in these cases, make sure that you are fully covered, even if it costs a little more. Footballers, boxers and skiers are also sometimes charged more.

When comparing the premiums of insurance companies, check that the benefits are similar, and that you are covered for all the possibilities listed in the ' standard ' policy above. Choose the policy that suits your individual requirements best. The conditions and benefits are far more important than the premiums.

Further details of special policies for sports are given on pages 189-91.
