Comprehensive policies

These policies vary from company to company in the type of cover they provide. A comprehensive policy can include any of the following:

1 Fill the legal liabilities a driver faces - death or- injury to third parties, including passengers; damage to property other than the drivers.

2 Damage when driving a vehicle other than Your own.

3 All legal costs.

4 Full cover for the loss or damage of your own vehicle, though there may be an exclusion clause which requires the driver to pay the first £25 or £50 of damage himself. The level will sometimes vary according to the drivers age.

5 Personal injury benefits to the driver, and his or her spouse. This is usually limited to £600,000 in a straightforward policy, but higher cover can be obtained.

Turn, to on personal accident policies for further information.

6 Medical expenses for the driver or passenger up to certain - often not generous - limits.

7 Loss of personal effects to a set limit; £75 is a common maximum.

8 Full cover for foreign travel, particularly in the EEC and other European countries.

In other countries you will need extra insurance (see 1 on travel insurance).
