WE imagined that anyone seeking insurance could call in at an insurance company to ask for an estimate of how much furniture and other items should be insured for. Not so, or at least not often so. Professional valuations can be done - the valuers fee is a proportion of the total value - but the insurance company itself is often reluctant to advise.

Most of us can't afford professional valuers, apart from a few valuable items we may own like silver or jewellery, so the next best thing is to do ones own valuation.

Go round your house or flat methodically writing down not what items have cost, but what it would cost you to replace them, if they were stolen or damaged by fire or flood.

In most cases you will be surprised at the final, total.

If you are uncertain, check current price levels in the shops. You will find that it does not take a long time for the replacement value oil the contents of even the most modest home to double in value.
