The information given may later be judged inadequate, not because the policyholder deliberately suppressed information which could affect the policy, but simply because he or she had no idea /that it was relevant.

Later when the claim is made, the company can arbitrarily decide that certain information should have been disclosed and refuse to pay out.

Here are just a few examples of failures to disclose or act in different types of policies which have resulted in insurance companies not paying out:

As person taking out life insurance states that he or she has no illnesses and cancer is diagnosed later and the policyholder dies. The company then refuses to pay out on the grounds that the illness was present at the time the policy was taken out.

A man is required to fit a mortise lock on his property and the house is later burned down, though not as the result of a break-in. The company refuses to pay for the damage.

A woman insures her jewellery and neglects to mention that as a child, her son was convicted of theft.

Should her jewellery be stolen, the company is entitled not to pay out
