Protected travel - Period Cost per Period Cost person

1 If you have a personal accident policy all the time, make sure it covers you if you are going abroad.

2 Medical and other expenses this is important.

Anyone visiting foreign countries should ensure that they are covered for any expenses if they are taken ill. Costs vary a great deal from country to country and it is only with the EEC countries (download forms from Ministry of Health and Social Security site) before you leave) that the United Kingdom has reciprocal arrangements for medical treatment.

Even there, treatment can be faster if you can pay immediately, because you know that you have your policy to fall back on.

Medical expenses can also include the costs of bringing you or your family home by ambulance or plane, and travel and hotel expenses for any member of your family who might have to travel out to be with you, if you have a stay in hospital.

Should you or any member of your family die, the transport of the body or ashes comes under this cover. Injuries sustained during a flight, or as the result of a plane crash are not covered in these policies and separate cover is needed for that, if you feel that you need more than the airline provides under the Warsaw Convention.

Fill air tickets should set out details of this cover and, if you need more, you can get it for a particular Right at very low cost from the airport just before you leave.

The Americas means the American continent, the Bahamas, the West Indies, the Caribbean and other islands between 45W and I05W.

3 Personal liability The above are very basic insurances to protect you against illness and accident when you are travelling, but, as always, there are other people to consider.

You might cause an accident to another person and it is as well to be covered for that There have been cases of people being jailed until they have been able to find the money to pay for such damage.

Many policies include free-cover personal liability if you take out other forms of cover. The limit may be as high as £250,000. Such an amount for nothing indicates just how rare such claims are, but the risk should not be totally ignored.

4 Loss of baggage Nothing is more irritating than losing your luggage. If it is lost by an airline it usually turns up eventually and you are entitled to ask the airline for replacement of essential items while you are waiting for it to be recovered.

But if it is lost forever, or stolen, you will need some cover if you are to get the full value of your belongings back.

Once again, this is not an expensive form of insurance, and the Royal costs again are as shown overleaf.

Minimum sum insured £200 per person (children under 15 year £50). Cost for each £600 insured:
