Protected travel - Taking your car abroad - Spain

You may have noticed in the list of possible mishaps at the beginning of this section the words bail bond.

This is required for Spain and without one you would be lucky to be allowed to drive in that country, and foolish to so do.

This is because under Spains motoring laws a car and its driver can be detained by the authorities after an accident and it is only on the production of a bail bond that a driver and car are certain to be released. This can happen no matter how trivial the accident. The bail bond guarantees that you will have enough money to defend yourself against any civil or criminal action brought against you, which may involve the payment of damages.

You will also have to guarantee that either you or your legal representative will attend any legal proceedings which may follow on your accident.

Naturally, most people can't travel with sufficient funds to cover themselves against any eventuality, though now that exchange control has been abolished there is no limit on the amount of money you can take out of the country Bail bonds are not expensive, costing around £16.50 for 1500,000 pesetas (£800) and £12.60 for 4000,000 pesetas. Some insurance companies offer a limit of £500. If you were involved in a major accident, this would certainly not be enough.

Get bail bonds worth at least £12,000.

don't underestimate the importance of having sufficient bail bond in Spain.

Others have done so and have found themselves in gaol.
