Protected travel - Taking your car abroad

All the mishaps which can befall you and your car in the United Kingdom can happen possibly even more frequently in unfamiliar surroundings - if you take it abroad.

Every country has its own rules about insurance and you will have to make sure that you are fully covered in the event of an accident, breakdown or damage to your car.

Most car insurance policies can be topped up to cover foreign travel for the period that you are away, but you can also take out special policies just to protect yourself and your car when on holiday.

Here are some of the services you may need and which may be more difficult for a Briton to get abroad rather than at home:

spare parts and emergency repairs

roadside assistance

vehicle recovery

medical and other expenses following an accident

personal liability

legal advice and expenses

alternative travel expenses

additional accommodation expenses

bail bond (for Spain)

These will not generally be included in a normal holiday insurance and you will have to take out extra insurance.

Take a careful look at what you are offered.

The cover for travel abroad-on your ordinary car insurance, if it exists at all, is unlikely to be as comprehensive as that offered by the policy in the United Kingdom, unless it was fixed up in the first place with a view to a great deal of foreign travel.

Insurers have no standard charges for covering a British car when it is abroad: it all depends on where you are going, for how long, and sometimes - for cars which are difficult to service overseas the maker of the car.
