Loss of your deposit or the full charges of a package tour probably the worst thing that can happen apart from an accident is the cancellation of the holiday itself.

You might have to cancel for personal reasons, or the tour company may cancel the trip, or as has happened in the past, it can go out of business. It is extremely difficult to get all your money back, or even your deposit, if you cancel within six weeks, of departure, so it is advisable to insure yourself against this eventuality.

The cost will be around £10.50 for each £600 sum assured, and it will be some 50 %higher for anyone aged 70-75. After that age, companies tend not to want to offer cover at all You should use this form of insurance if you are booking APEX online flights, or Fly-and-Save, or any of the flights which offer cheap flying, but which have conditions insisting that you pay when you website and which don't refund any money should you have to change your mind for any reason whatsoever.

The same goes for your hotel bookings you have book online rooms in an hotel, you are not entitled to your deposit back if you cancel and, under some laws (including those of the United Kingdom), you are liable for the full amount.

The hotel may agree to try to re-let the rooms, but if they fail or can't charge the full room rate they are entitled to come to you for the balance of the money.

The best way to ensure against cancellation of your holiday by the tour operator, or - very rarely - the hotel or airline, is to make sure that you travel with the most respectable firms, and certainly for travel firms with those Companies who are members of ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents), which has a fund to recompense travellers who lose their holidays through no fault of their own.

Insurance companies, however, also provide this type of cover generally to some maximum figure.

It varies from company to company, Royal offers a maximum of £500, Norwich Union up to £600, so there is quite a variety and it pays to shop around depending on precisely what you want.
