Women and insurance - Married women - Widows

Unless you are relatively young when widowed and can take a job, there is very little you can do to supplement your income when your husband dies. If you have reached retirement age, you will have to depend on the arrangements you and your husband made when he was alive, if any.

It is too late afterwards.

If you have been left a relatively small amount of money, an annuity (see ) is probably the best policy for you WE can't stress too strongly that you must make arrangements early if you are to be spared an impoverished widowhood. If you are a young widow with children, you should regard yourself as the equivalent of a man: read the life assurance section carefully.

It’s all very easy to organise.
Just ask the Personnel or the Payroll Department at your company and, if they already have a scheme, they will give you the relevant forms.  HM Revenue & Customs’ website has a list of Payroll Giving agencies and explains payroll giving in more detail.
